JEWELLERY FOR MEN, WITHOUT THE COSTUME

Most men own one watch and nothing else. Not because they dislike jewellery, but because most of what is sold to them is either a novelty or a copy of something a woman would wear.

This collection is built on the opposite premise: weight, proportion and a finish that holds. A piece a man can put on once and forget about — which is the only kind he will actually keep wearing.

WHAT IT IS MADE OF

Titanium finished with 18K gold PVD is the backbone of the men's collection. Titanium is stronger than steel and roughly half its weight, does not rust, does not fade, and does not provoke the reaction that cheap alloys cause on skin.

PVD bonds the gold to the metal at a molecular level inside a vacuum chamber. That is why the finish survives a wrist, a pocket and a car door — the three things that destroy conventional plating within a season.

Where a piece is gold vermeil, it carries 3 microns of 18K gold, six times standard plating. Why that number matters.

THE CATEGORIES

Bracelets are where most men start — leather, beaded stone, or a chain in gold PVD. Necklaces range from a discreet 50 cm chain to a 60 cm worn over knitwear, with or without a pendant.

Rings run from US size 8 to 13 in signet, band and symbol designs. Watches bring European minimalist design and Japanese movements, and sunglasses complete the set with polarised UV400 lenses.

THE SYMBOLS

A symbol carries the piece when a man does not want ornament for its own sake. The lion stands for strength and self-possession. The anchor — our own emblem — for someone steady and true to what he believes. The evil eye for protection, worn across the Mediterranean for thousands of years.

Symbol pieces read as deliberate rather than decorative, which is precisely why they suit men who do not otherwise wear jewellery.

HOW TO START, IF YOU NEVER HAVE

Begin with one piece on the wrist you already use for a watch, or the opposite one. A single bracelet in a dark stone or black leather reads as considered and asks nothing of the rest of the outfit.

Add the second only when the first stops feeling like an event. Keep the metal tone consistent, vary the texture, and stop at three pieces including the watch. Most men who wear too much jewellery are wearing too many of the same thing rather than too many things.

FINDING YOUR SIZE

The most common men's ring size is US 9 to 10, and the most common wrist falls in M or L. But a guide is not a measurement, and a piece of string with a ruler settles it in two minutes.

CHOOSING A GIFT FOR HIM

If you are buying for a man who owns no jewellery, choose a bracelet rather than a ring: a wrist is easier to estimate than a finger, and many designs are adjustable or one size.

Black and gold is the safest combination and the hardest to get wrong. A symbol he recognises — a lion, an anchor — makes the piece personal without needing an engraving.

HOW TO CARE FOR IT

Take it off before training, swimming and sauna. Perspiration and chlorine change any finish over time, and the gym is where most men's jewellery is ruined.

Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and keep it in its box rather than loose in a drawer. Leather asks for one more thing: keep it away from prolonged water and it will develop a patina of its own.
