MÅNGATA
There is a Swedish word for the reflection the moon leaves across water — a shifting path of light that looks solid until you move, and never appears the same way twice. The word is mångata.
It is the right name for a bag cut from python. The scales catch light the way water does, and the pattern that runs across one skin will not be found on another.
NO TWO BAGS ARE THE SAME
A python skin carries a pattern that formed as the animal grew. Scale size, spacing and the way the markings fall are unique to each skin, and no tannery can reproduce them.
This is the opposite of how most handbags are made. A printed or embossed finish gives you a pattern that repeats every few centimetres and appears identically on every bag in the shop. Here, the bag you receive is the only one of its kind, and the photographs can only ever be an indication.
WORKED BY HAND, SCALE BY SCALE
Exotic leather cannot be cut the way cowhide is. The skin has to be read first — where the scales are widest, where the pattern is strongest, where the natural line of the body should fall on the finished panel.
That decision is made by hand before a single cut, and it is the reason two bags from the same batch are never laid out the same way. The edges are finished by hand, and the Alison Mariot logo is stamped inside rather than displayed outside.
THE CLASP
The closure is a snake-head clasp finished in 18K gold PVD — the same process used across our jewellery, where the gold is bonded to the metal at a molecular level rather than laid on top of it.
On a bag this matters more than on a bracelet. The clasp is touched every time the bag is opened, which is exactly where conventional plating wears through first.
CITES AND WHY IT MATTERS
Exotic leather is regulated internationally under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Our python leather is sourced under CITES certification.
This is not a marketing line. Without that documentation an exotic leather bag cannot legally cross a border, which is why the question is worth asking of anyone selling one. A seller who cannot answer it is telling you something.
HOW IT AGES
Python does not wear out the way coated leather does. It softens. The scales settle against each other, the surface takes on a quieter sheen, and the piece begins to look like it belongs to someone.
A synthetic finish does the opposite: it looks its best on the first day and declines from there. This is the practical argument for exotic leather, and it is the same argument as 3 microns of gold rather than half a micron — buy once, keep it.
HOW TO CARE FOR IT
Keep it dry. Water lifts the scales, and prolonged damp is the one thing python does not forgive. If it is caught in rain, let it dry naturally away from any heat source — never a radiator or a hairdryer.
Wipe it with a soft dry cloth, always in the direction the scales lie, never against them. Do not use leather creams or conditioners made for smooth hide; they are too heavy for exotic skin. Store the bag lightly filled so it holds its shape, out of direct sunlight, and avoid overloading it.
WHAT EVERY ORDER INCLUDES
Each bag arrives in the signature Alison Mariot gift box and is covered by a two-year international warranty against manufacturing defects in materials or craftsmanship. Natural variation in scale pattern and tone is not a defect — it is the evidence that the skin is real.
We ship worldwide by express courier, with delivery in 1 to 3 working days across Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Exchanges and returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery.

Designed in Toronto, Canada. Made to be remembered.
